In this era of COVID-19...whether you are a seasoned volunteer leader or new to the field...we invite you to join us as explore ways to:

  • Identify what motivates potential local and virtual volunteers and how to find the right fit for their skills and interests
  • Utilize skilled volunteers 
  • Design volunteer job descriptions and targeted recruitment plans
  • Implement strategies for successful volunteer engagement, including gaining staff buy-in

Presented by: Carla Lehn, CVA

Carla Lehn began her career as a VISTA volunteer, and after receiving a Masters in Community Development from the University of California, Davis, worked for United Way for over a decade. Prior to joining the California State Library staff in 2001 to work on statewide literacy, volunteerism, and community engagement initiatives, she was a private consultant based in Hawaii on volunteer engagement, board development, and community collaboration. Carla has published several articles, and a previous book on volunteer engagement. Her most recent book, From Library Volunteer to Library Advocate: Tapping into the Power of Community Engagement, was published in June 2018.Since her December 2015 retirement, Carla has focused on her consulting practice, bucket list travel and continues to be an active volunteer. She currently serves as the principal consultant on Get Involved: Powered by Your Library an initiative of the California State Library designed to expand the visibility and contributions of skilled volunteers in public libraries by providing promising and proven volunteer engagement practices through staff networking and training. New training and resources are being added regularly to the online Get Involved Clearinghouse to help libraries rebuild their volunteer engagement programs during and after the pandemic.

Since 1978 DOVIA Sacramento has served to broaden community awareness of volunteerism by furthering communication among DOVIA members, Sacramento/Sierra Region area community agencies, and the public. During this COVID-19 pandemic, DOVIA Sacramento continues to provide a forum for the exchange of information for professional and volunteer leaders to enhance their skills in the volunteer management field.
